More AMRs Don’t Automatically Create a Better Material Flow

Website - Kamp. 3 X-SWARM

A single AMR can transport a load from A to B. But once multiple AMRs begin sharing tasks, transport routes, and floor space, the intelligence of the fleet becomes the deciding factor in whether automation delivers a stable material flow or creates new bottlenecks.

It’s 10:14 AM.

Three new transport tasks are generated almost simultaneously. The nearest AMR is already transporting a pallet. Another has a low battery level. At the same time, the shortest route is temporarily blocked by a manually placed load carrier.

Nothing has changed on the product specification sheet.

The AMRs still have the same speed, lifting capacity, and battery life.

Yet the performance of the material flow now depends on something entirely different:

How do the AMRs work together?

This is where the difference between multiple autonomous vehicles and a coordinated AMR fleet becomes clear.

A Robot Is a Vehicle. A Fleet Is a System.

When implementing the first AMR, the task is often relatively straightforward.

The vehicle picks up a load carrier at one station, transports it through a defined area, and delivers it to another station. It must navigate safely, detect obstacles, and position itself accurately.

However, as soon as the second AMR is introduced, the challenge changes

Now the robots must not only take people, manual forklifts, pallets, and racking into account.

They must also take each other into account.

As the fleet grows, new interdependencies emerge:

  • Multiple vehicles may be candidates for the same transport task
  • Several AMRs may need to use the same route
  • One AMR’s decisions can influence the routes of the entire fleet
  • A blockage can create congestion if information is not shared
  • Poor task allocation can result in unnecessary travel and waiting time
  • A vehicle outage can impact multiple processes simultaneously

The challenge is therefore not simply to make each AMR operate efficiently.

The real challenge is enabling the entire fleet to make decisions that support the overall material flow.

What Does X-SWARM Mean in Practice?

The term Swarm Intelligence may sound abstract.

In reality, it comes down to three practical questions:

  1. Which AMR should take the next transport task?
  2. Which route should that AMR choose?
  3. How should the fleet respond when conditions change?

With AGILOX X-SWARM, the AMRs communicate directly with one another. They exchange information about their position and operational status several times per second, creating a shared understanding of which vehicles are performing which tasks.

Communication itself is not what creates value.

The value comes from transforming that shared information into better decisions regarding task allocation, route selection, fleet utilisation, and the optimisation of internal logistics.

The Closest AMR Isn’t Always the Best Choice

When a new transport task is created, it may seem logical to assign it to the AMR closest to the pick-up station.

However, physical distance is only one part of the decision.

The nearest AMR may already be occupied with another task. It may have a low battery level or be positioned in a way that would require an inefficient route.

Another AMR may be slightly further away, but available, carrying a higher battery charge, and better positioned to complete the overall task.

For that reason, AGILOX X-SWARM does not rely on a fixed dispatch schedule. Tasks are assigned dynamically based on factors such as vehicle position, battery level, and current workload.

This allows decisions to be made according to the current operational situation rather than following static rules where a specific AMR is permanently assigned to a particular area.

In practice, this can contribute to:

  • A more balanced distribution of workload
  • Fewer unnecessary detours
  • Better utilisation of the available fleet
  • Reduced risk of individual AMRs becoming bottlenecks
  • More stable handling of peak workloads

Decentralised Doesn’t Mean Isolated

The fact that AGILOX X-SWARM does not rely on a central master computer for fleet coordination does not mean the AMR solution operates as an isolated system.

AGILOX supports integration with higher-level warehouse and logistics systems such as WMS and ERP through open interfaces and REST APIs. The AMRs can also communicate with equipment including doors, lifts, conveyors, and other automated systems.

This enables AGILOX to become a natural part of an existing logistics infrastructure. Transport tasks can be triggered automatically based on information from surrounding systems, while X-SWARM coordinates and distributes those tasks across the AMR fleet.

The result is a more connected material flow where information and transportation work seamlessly together.

Flexibility Exists on Three Levels

Omnidirectional Mobility, HMI, and X-SWARM each serve a different purpose.

Together, they create three distinct layers of flexibility.

Omnidirectional Mobility Creates Physical Flexibility

The vehicle can move forwards, backwards, sideways, and diagonally, while also rotating around its own axis.

This provides greater freedom to navigate narrow spaces and approach workstations with precision.

HMI Creates Operational Flexibility

A trained employee can create stations, modify the facility map, and make other day-to-day adjustments.

This makes it easier to adapt the AMR solution as production and material flow evolve.

X-SWARM Creates Fleet-Level Flexibility

The AMRs share information, allocate tasks, and optimise routes across the fleet.

This enables the entire fleet to respond intelligently as transport demands, fleet size, or changing conditions evolve.

None of these three layers should stand alone.

The greatest value is achieved when freedom of movement, user adaptability, and fleet intelligence work together.
