Trailer loading and unloading is often where automation stops

Trailer loading and unloading is still a manual process in many companies. Not because automation does not create value, but because the complexity at the dock makes it difficult to implement in practice.

Limited space, high throughput, and strict safety requirements create an environment where even small mistakes can have major consequences. That is exactly why trailer loading and unloading is often the last stop on the automation journey.

But it is also where the biggest potential lies.

From dock to trailer without manual handling

With AGILOX’s new trailer loading and unloading functionality, it becomes possible to automate the entire process. Not only transport to the dock, but also the actual handling inside the trailer.

AMRs drive directly into the trailer and place pallets precisely, without human intervention. This creates a continuous flow where material handling no longer stops at the gate.

It sounds simple. It is not.

One of the most demanding disciplines

Trailer loading and unloading places high demands on both technology and system setup. The combination of tight space, high speed, and strict stability requirements makes it a highly complex operation.

Traditionally, the solution has either been manual handling or heavy, purpose built systems. Often with high investment and limited flexibility.

A different approach to automation

This is where AGILOX stands out.

Instead of developing dedicated single purpose robots, the solution is based on AMRs such as ONE and OFL. This allows companies to work with a proven system already integrated into many internal logistics flows.

To enable safe navigation inside narrow trailers, the following elements are part of the integrated process:

  • Safety sensor positioning
Safety sensors are installed either in the floor or mounted in the ceiling of the loading area. They ensure the AMR is correctly positioned and that no unauthorized personnel or objects are present. Only when the area is validated does the robot adjust its safety scanners to enter the trailer.
  • Seamless transitions
The system compensates for small misalignments between truck and dock, ensuring stable and precise operation without manual correction.
  • Reliable signal exchange
A core part of the solution is stable, integrated safety signal communication between AGILOX and the facility. This ensures full compliance with industrial safety standards.

A natural next step

For many companies, trailer loading and unloading is still one of the last manual steps in logistics. But with the right robots, it is no longer a limitation.

The question is no longer whether it can be automated.

But when it makes the most sense to take the next step.
